Danakil is the deepest part of Ethiopia at 116 Mt below sea level. It stretches between the Red Sea and the foothills of the eastern slopes of Ethiopian plateau. The depression has marvelous pattern of volcanoes, its activity greatly contributing to the formation of the present Rift Valley. The whole part of this natural wonder is inhabited by the Afar people, nomadic shepherds carrying salt in their caravans up to the Ethiopian Highlands.
